Vince Cable has announced that UK Hallmarking will remain in place as a result of the huge response to the Governments proposals to abolish it, as part of the ‘Red Tape Challenge’.

Back in April we reported that the Hallmark was under threat and that we all had the opportunity to express our views on a Government website. Almost 6000 jewellers, consumers, retailers and designers posted on the site, resulting in the recent announcement which is good news for the jewellery trade and for consumer standards.

Minister for Business and Enterprise Mark Prisk said:

“We’ve listened to what people have said about the confusing and overlapping rules with the aim to get rid of the ones we don’t need and making the ones we do simpler to understand and put into practice. At the same time though we are preserving good regulation, such as the hallmarking regime, for which there was strong support.”
