An Introduction to Business for Jewellers and Silversmiths
Monday 17th to Friday 21st January 2011

The Goldsmiths’ Company has announced that applications are open for its renowned business course “Getting Started”. A highly popular course, it is offered annually to recent graduates of jewellery, silversmithing and allied trades as part of the Company’s support for the Craft and Industry.

The course, now in its 30th year, is a week-long introduction to business and has helped launch many careers within the industry.
It is designed to provide an introduction to the industry and the career opportunities on offer.  Whether the individuals are planning to work for a company or to establish themselves as a self-employed designer-maker the course is equally relevant.

Held over five days, the varied and interesting programme includes a comprehensive series of talks by prominent and experienced speakers from within the industry, covering topics ranging from jewellery trends to the practicalities of setting up a business and selling one’s own work.  Examples of the themes covered are listed below.

Jos Skeates – Director of ECOne gallery, London - Life as maker and retailer.
Elizabeth Oliver – Design director at Annoushka Ltd - Life as a designer.
Ndidi Ekubia – Designer silversmith - Making a living as a silversmith.
Rachel Sweeney – MD Cox & Power London - Running a manufacturing and retail business.
Isobel Dennis – Director New Designers, Upper Street Events – Exhibition Planning.
Rebecca and Howard van Rooijen – founders of Benchpeg - Utilising social media.
Dana Robertson and Tom Banks – Creative director and founder of Neon Branding Design Company - What is branding and what does it mean to you?
