Craft and Design Month is a ‘not for profit’ initiative launched by Craft & Design Magazine.  The magazine’s editor, Angie Boyer, explains: “There are many thousands of craftsmen and women who manufacture and sell their products in the UK and to the overseas markets who are completely overlooked by newspapers reporting on the demise of domestic manufacturing.

“In fact, the Crafts Council has reported that there are around 35,000 contemporary craftsmen and women with a collective turnover of around £1billion.  Craft is incredibly important to the economy but also to our wellbeing and way of life.  If we don’t use the talents of people on our doorstep, they will disappear forever.  We hope that by shining the spotlight on the skills of craftsmen and women throughout the country, the general public will think twice about who to go to when they need something for the home. If we succeed in that, Craft and Design Month will have served its purpose.”

Craft and Design are inviting makers, craft guilds, associations, craft fair organisers, galleries and materials suppliers to get involved by organising events in association with ‘Craft and Design Month’.

If you are already involved in a craft events or exhibition during May 2011, you are invited to add your details to the list of events for May 2011, or to do something especially for Craft and Design Month; to wave a flag for Crafts in the UK and promote your own craft business along the way.
Whatever you do, you can list it all on the ‘Craft and Design Month’ website, free of charge, and they will use some of the information they receive in national and regional promotion of Craft and Design Month.

If you visit the Find Events page of their site, you'll find details of things people are planning to do during Craft and Design Month. Here are some suggestions for getting involved, but there are lots of other ideas:

As well as letting 'Craft & Design Month' know in advance about your events, throughout the month of May they would love to know how things are going or what’s happening near you so that they can share it on their blog. Send in your news and photos of anything and everything that’s going on and they’ll do their best to add it as quickly as possible.
