During the first two weekends in May, artists and crafts people across the Sheffield region will be opening up their studios to the public as part of the 'Open Up Sheffield' arts trail.
The initiative offers artists opportunities to showcase their work, engage a curious public, and network with other artists, all within a supportive digital and live environment.

This year’s open studios event includes 107 of the most committed and greatest artists in Sheffield and South Yorkshire, making, demonstrating and exhibiting their work in a range of non-traditional studios and venues, all completely free of charge.
You can walk into working studios with no prior appointment across 2 weekends, and will be welcomed by a range of artists of different genres, who produce an astonishing array of quality, creative work in every style and medium imaginable.

This year six jewellery designers are welcoming the public to their studios in the Sheffield area, including GoJD member Sabine Little.

I am a professional glass bead maker and jewellery designer, creating glass beads using a torch and kiln. Live demonstrations given on all days.

I am a full-time lampwork artist and jewellery designer, shaping glass in the flame into beads and small ornamental objects.

After a degree in Music, I worked in education for a number of years, including as a teacher, a lecturer, and an educational developer. Now, I work from my two-torch studio in the beautiful Peak District, and teach glass bead making both to individuals and on group courses.

I am best known for my sculptural rose and butterfly beads, and am regularly published and exhibited in the UK and Germany. My inspiration, unsurprisingly, comes from my beautiful Peak District surroundings, although I have a love for words and poetry, which results in a constant flow of new ideas.

I sell both glass beads and jewellery, including celebratory jewellery made from champagne bottle glass beads, using bottles from weddings, birthdays, corporate events and other celebrations.

I create “Enamelled Treasures” using vitreous enamels, exploiting the wonderful colours, qualities and behaviour of the glass with multiple firings at temperatures of up to 900°C.

I look to the natural world for inspiration, but am also inspired by the qualities and shades of the enamels, not just the visual but a physical reaction of one colour applied against another, especially at high temperatures.

I create bowls, boxes and small pictures, “treasures” for the home and for personal adornment, earrings (for pierced and non-pierced ears), neckpieces and cufflinks.

With a huge colour range to work with, I specialise in colour matching.

I use traditional silversmithing techniques to create contemporary silver and gold fine jewellery. Visitors will be welcome to try out some of these techniques.

I have worked for over 15 years making silver and gold jewellery in Sheffield and have recently moved to a new workshop and studio space at Victoria Quay. If you haven’t visited Victoria Quay before the canal basin has been beautifully restored and is a very inspiring place to work.

My most recognisable collection is made up of large one off pieces based on myth and symbolism that are often very narrative. My work tends to be very tactile and I like to make jewellery you constantly want to touch and feel the different textures of the metal and stones. I welcome commissions and bespoke design work.

If you would like to have a go at silver jewellery making during Open Up, please contact me and I will book you a 30 minute slot to try some of the techniques and hopefully take small item away with you.

I am a textile designer, specialising in contemporary knitted textiles in exciting materials for interiors and fashion accessories. My inspiration comes from Scandinavian and Japanese artists using constructed textiles in architectural spaces.

My aim is to create contemporary knitted textiles for architectural spaces. My inspiration has come from Scandinavian and Japanese artists working with constructed textiles in exciting materials in architectural settings. My work combines traditional and contemporary materials such as stainless steel and silk, challenging the traditional images of knitted textiles. My pieces are very tactile and qualities of light, reflection and shadow influence design decisions.

This work has also developed into fashion to produce a range of accessories including snoods, fingerless gloves, and knitted jewellery.

Prior to studying textiles, (BA Hons Textiles - Manchester School of Art) I established and managed my own environmental consultancy and was awarded an MBE for Services to the Environment. The natural environment continues to be an important source of inspiration in my work.

Hand made jewellery and small decorative items in silver and gold, featuring hand made chains, chasing and repoussé. Inspired by gardens, woodland and seashore.

I make intricate, delicate jewellery - necklaces, earrings, bracelets, cufflinks and rings, in silver and gold; tiny silver books with messages inside, little boxes to hide your secrets in, and small decorative bowls.

Chasing is a technique I use in most of my pieces, where the silver or gold is stuck onto pitch, and worked into with different shaped punches, to create textures and forms in the metal. I also specialize in hand made chains, where each link is individually formed, sometimes hammered, and soldered together.

Influences are the structure and texture of natural forms- shells, seed pods, leaves, flowers, bark, rippled sand and swirling water. My favourite places are gardens, woodland and the seashore.

I sell my work through exhibitions and galleries, and also undertake private commissions.

I am spending my final year as a Freeman College student doing work experience with Contemporary Jeweller and Lapidiarist, Richard Priestly. I work in pewter, silver and polished stones. Natural forms influence my designs.

My first craft experience was in a College pewter work shop. I started with spun pewter salt and pepper pots, working up to a hip flask and tankard set. This was really an apprenticeship model, I was taught by Danny Rowen, who has been a pewter worker in Sheffield for 30 years.

I particularly like hands on work, being able to craft an object straight from my imagination. I like a process where thinking of an idea can be worked out directly through learning skills and how the materials work; taking a flat piece of metal or wax and turning it into a finished product. I enjoy learning by watching how an object develops through the process.

I realised coming to College that I have an interest in Arts and Crafts.

In the early stages I was making work already designed for me, building my skills as a metal worker. When I started making jewellery it gave me the freedom to design the whole product, expressing and developing my own ideas. Since I’ve been doing work experience with Jeweller & Lapidiarist, Richard Priestly, I have made some cast silver horse brooches. These are early pieces from my own design and mark a movement from making jewellery similar to my tutors and mentors.
